Robin of Sherwood premiered on ITV in 1984 and ran for three seasons before being canceled due to the production studio’s waning budget and the show’s high per-episode cost. HTV’s mid-’80s TV show Robin of Sherwood stands tall in the field of adaptations, and Acorn Media celebrates this important series with their new Blu-ray release, Robin of Sherwood: Set 1. Through the decades of Robin Hood movies and series, a select few titles stand out as truly innovative and important in the maintenance and evolution of the folk hero. The story of Robin Hood is one of the most popular legends that has borne countless adaptations, from Robin’s first appearance on screen in 1908’s Robin Hood and His Merry Men through 2010’s lackluster Ridley Scott film. Also, my father's people were from an area close to Sherwood so I can watch this and I can compare these people to my ancestors that came to the USA hundreds of years ago.Folklore and legends long have inspired adaptations as movies and TV shows, and a handful of these tales tend to show up every few years with a new retelling. This is one reason that I have worn out 2 VHS movies and now I will wear out the DVD. And the way it ends is also perfect - with Sean Connery as who else but King Richard. This is no spoof of Robin and his "Merry Men" it is a realistic movie with plenty of emotional action in it. The characters all are so realistic that they seem to be perfect extractions of this era and place. They are so realistic and so down to earth with their passions for life, living, and their pursuits of happiness. This movie doesn't let the audience down with other characters. And the Blessed Marion - so beautiful, so raised to her position in life, is functionable as one who serves her peoples, is witty, and despite all, so human. He really acts like a spoiled brat raised by wicked person who spoiled him rotten. The "Sherrif" of Notingham is so dastardly that he is amusing. He also displays the impish character of this type of person. He has the cocky-ness of a son of an English Lord. But he is very good at making you believe that the accent doesn't matter any. The people are so true to life with the exception of Kevin Costner who does not sport the English accent. The other sets are so defined and displayed that they are also deemed as real. Other sets in the movie may be man made but this place is a true creation of God. One would think without actually knowing that this place must be the Sherwood Forest a place where legends are born. The forest with its beautiful little river is the perfect place to have filmed this movie. The woodsy setting is so believable as to have actually been the place where Robin Hood actually met h is band of "Merry" men. Their relationship becomes entwined with the matters of the day and the need to overthrough evil with good. Robin and the maid Marion products of societies' good fighting evil, as the Crusaders fight the heathen, the evil sorcerists fight against the Christians, etc. This movie goes into a historical part of the man and his followers, providing an interesting idea of what it was really like to have lived in this age of sorcery, politics, classes of people, and thier lifestyles. Robin Hood must have lived to have been a part of the English lore that we have always enjoyed. Being a descendent of this area of England, I love to watch movies of this time and area. It may not matter to some people, but I would have bought a different dvd version if I had known about it. This may seem trivial & isn't life threatening, but it's very annoying if your a big "movie night" person. Someone has to get up to open the dvd player, flip the disc, and start play again. The movie is only 144 minutes.aren't dvd's suppost to hold several hours of info?!? This means you can't just sit on your couch and enjoy the movie all the way through. You have to flip the dvd over about half way through to finish the movie. We thought something was wrong with the disc. The down side is the movie just goes black in the middle of a scene and goes to the main menu without any warning. I've had it since its release in the early 90's on vhs and decided to upgrade it to my dvd collection. Great Movie,But Can't Watch it Straight Through.READ!įirst off, I love this movie! It's completely full of action and humor, has an incredible cast, and it's one of Kevin Costner's best.
